by Michael D. Snow, OAS President
On behalf of the University of Portland, I invite you to attend the 59th annual meeting of the Oregon Academy of Science. The annual meeting of the OAS will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2001 on the University of Portland campus .
We expect the conference to attract several hundred scientists from across Oregon and southwest Washington. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Kent Thornburg of the Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr. Thornburg is the director of the Congenital Heart Research Center. He is internationally known for his research in the developmental biology of the heart. Dr. Thornburg's topic will be "Squeezing science out of the 1mm heart."
Junior Academy Will Hold Separate Meeting As we did last year, the Oregon Academy of Science's Senior and Junior Academy of Science sessions will meet separately. The Senior Academy of Science will meet at University of Portland on Saturday, February 24, 2001, while the Junior Academy will hold it's sessions a week later on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. We hope that this new format will continue to encourage greater participation by Junior and Senior members at both meetings.
The sessions of the Junior Academy of Science have been growing increasingly popular in the recent years. We expect that the program will once again draw close to one hundred presentations covering a diverse range of topics. Following concurrent sessions, the participants of the Junior Academy will gather to enjoy luncheon activities.
Contact Adele Schepige at Western Oregon University, Monmouth, OR 97361, (503)838-8485, (email: schepia@wou.edu) for information concerning the independent Junior Academy sessions. Abstracts should be submitted directly to Adele by January 5, 2000.
Both Oral and Poster Presentations are Planned Numerous sessions in all sections of the Academy will highlight the day's activities. The OAS sections include Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, Geology, History and Philosophy of Science, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Science Education, and Sociology-Anthropology (SOAN). In the morning, authors in all the sections will present talks and respond to questions on their research. A plenary luncheon session follows and features our keynote speaker, Dr. Kent Thornburg. The luncheon session will also include the presentation of awards for Outstanding Contribution to Science, Outstanding College Educator in Science and Mathematics, and Outstanding K-12 Educator in Science and Mathematics. An afternoon session in several sections will conclude the series of talks. Concurrently, there will be several panel discussions as well as opportunities to tour the recently opened Swindells Science Center.
A poster format for reporting research results continues as an option at this year's conference. The poster sessions will provide authors with an avenue for sharing and discussing their research. This format allows visitors to see more science and to interact one-on-one with the authors. Members from all the sections are encouraged to contribute a poster. We hope that you will find this forum a stimulating part of the day's activities.
We encourage you and your students to attend, participate and present papers and posters on research projects, regardless of their stages of development. Senior researchers in education and industry use these meetings to update their colleagues on recent progress in their investigations. Students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels find this platform an ideal opportunity to deliver oral and poster presentations in a formal, yet non-intimidating setting. Keep in mind you must be a member to present at the meetings. You are strongly encouraged to become a member and pre-register for the annual meeting using the form included in this newsletter.
Guidelines for Submission of Abstracts The deadline for receipt of abstracts is January 5, 2001 Abstracts should be submitted directly to the section chair of your discipline. Guidelines for submission of abstracts for either oral or poster presentations will follow the procedure used in previous years. We request that you write an abstract in 12 point Times using either Microsoft Word or WordPerfect format on either the Windows or Macintosh platform. The abstract should consist of 250 words or less and may include equations, pictures and graphs. Type the title in CAPITAL LETTERS l and include the names of all contributing authors and the full address (institution, department, city, state and zip code) where the research was done. Construct an engaging and informative abstract, as it will become a permanent, published record of the Academy's Proceedings. Save your abstract to a 3.5" diskette and mail it, along with a hard copy of the abstract and complete address information, to your section chair by January 5, 2001. A list of section chairs appears below.
